Tram or bus in Edinburgh

There will be two of us in Edinburgh in August. We will be staying in the Gilmore Place area and doing touristy things in Old Town and perhaps up to Leith. Are the tram and bus very similar in operations and routes? Any pros to taking one or the other? I don't remember trams the last time we visited.
Thank you for your help

I will go out on a limb as we have only been in Edinburgh once about ten years ago. We used the bus almost exclusively. There was a tram from the airport to the main train station but don't remember other tram -- But ten years is a long time.

Nowadays the tram extends to Leith for the Royal Yacht, and is faster than the bus. Mix and match would be my view. To Leith maybe tram one way, bus the other.

When we were in Edinburgh last June, we each bought a DAYticket for 5 pounds. It was good for unlimited bus and tram travel on the Lothian buses/trams. We mostly took the trams just because there was a tram stop near our hotel.

The trams don’t run all over the city.
Only down Leith Walk, and out to the airport.
Buses run all over the place.
Get the app for Lothian Buses and you can see routes in real time.
Gilmore Place is easy to get to and from…plenty buses nearby going into the centre and other parts.
I lived on Gillespie Crescent, the next street south from Gilmore Place, as a student in the 80’s.
You can use your bank or credit card to tap in to pay….it tots up your daily amount spent after midnight, and there is a capped amount for each day.
