Hi. My husband and I will be arriving in Edinburgh June 3 for our first trip to Scotland. We plan to take the tram from the airport to our lodging near the City Center. Would anyone know if the ticket machines accept American credit cards, or do we need to get change beforehand?
Chip and PIN card required for the machines, which also take coins but no notes.
There is usually a member of staff to help out people at the Airport stop only who can take notes and swipe cards, but I guess this is not absolutely guaranteed.
Thanks, Marco. That answered my question. Getting coins will probably be our best bet.
Also, it is an easy walk from baggage pick-up and you will pass the VisitScotland shop prior. We stocked up on several brochures there right before we picked up our rental car. I made a mental note for future visits.
You may have learned this from other posts in this Forum, or elsewhere, but to get notes at the Edinburgh airport, use the ATM's on the second floor. The escalators to the upper floor are a two-minute walk from baggage claim. There are a number of cash-dispensing machines on the main floor before you get to baggage claim, but they belong to an exchange bureau and issue cash at unfavorable exchange rates. Proper, bank-owned ATM's are on the 2nd floor. There's an "Eat" stand across from the ATM's, where you could use one of your new notes to purchase a piece of fruit or a chocolate croissant or other snack, and get some coins back as change for the tram. Right next door to Eat are restrooms, if you need to "go" before you hit the tram.
there is a stand that sells tickets for the airport buses on the way to the tram stop. I am not sure but they may sell tram tickets there. I am travelling back to Edinburgh from Prague this morning so will check with the stand there.I use the tram but I have an annual transport card I can use on the buses and trams. hopefully I can report back later today or tomorrow
they do not sell tram tickets at the stall where you get bus tickets, seems a bit daft to me as they are the same company.
yup, you can use your card that has the chip at the machines directly before you get on the tram. As mentioned earlier there were two guys there that were very help. the tram conductor was also extremely helpful for novice tram riders, I found the transfer on the tram a breeze, we rode to the final stop, a quick easy ride.
