Train travel between Glasgow & Edinburgh (or possibly round trip!)

My husband and I are hiring a car in Glasgow for a trip through the highlands and returning through Stirling. The last few days of our trip are in Edinburgh. Would we be better off returning our car to Glasgow airport and taking a train back to Edinburgh (on a Tuesday evening)? Or, taking the car to Edinburgh (paying the 1 way fee) and then returning to Glasgow airport by train the final day of our trip (Friday)?

How long does it take to travel between Glasgow and Edinburgh? How much time should we allow? Our flight on the final day of our trip leaves at 2:45pm in the afternoon.

We are trying to decide how best to manage travel at the end of our trip.

Also, what is the best type of train ticket to purchase for a simple trip between Edinburgh and Glasgow (or potentially Glasgow to Edinburgh roundtrip)?

Thank you all of your assistance! We are very excited for our trip!

There is a train from Glasgow to Edinburgh every 30 minutes (check hours of operation). It takes about 1 hour and costs under $20.00 one way. You can get discounts depending on time of purchase. I found this easily on line. There are other options even including ride shares.

If you are ending your driving part in Stirling, why go to Glasgow Airport to drop off the car, then travel to Edinburgh, and then travel back to glasgow.

You can take the train to Glasgow and then walk a couple of blocks to get the bus to the airport (#500) or you can take the #900 bus from Edinburgh ($14) to the Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow and then switch to the #500 which will take you to the airport.
Less walking. And they are comfortable coaches.

No direct train or buses from Edinburgh to Glasgow airport.
