Train then Ferry to Isle of Skye

What is the easiest web site to book the West Highland line train from Glasgow to Mallaig? I've looked at some train schedules and it is difficult to interpret. Need to book the earliest train out of Queens station in Glasgow.
It looks like the train does plan to stop at Oban, Fort William; we want to get off at Mallaig to take ferry.

Does one need to book in advance to walk on the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale? It does look like we can rent a car at Armadale if I"m correct?

Oban is on a different line to Mallaig
Trains from Glasgow normally split into two at Crianlarich with one portion going to Oban and the other to Fort William and Mallaig
Scotrail run the services so best to check on their website
When are you going? Services at the moment are greatly restricted plus there is the threat of a national rail strike.
There is no need to book the Skye ferry as foot passengers
Car hire on Skype is fairly limited, will leave to others to respond on that

When do you want to come to Skye? Trains are running an emergency timetable at the moment due to staff shortages. You will be changing trains at Fort William for the line to Mallaig.

As for car hire on Skye, then it's pretty much booked out for this summer. There are only a couple of very small, local operators on the island and when I (as a local resident) needed to rent a car at short notice recently, I was told by both providers that they are booked up for the summer season.

Best wishes

We are going mid July (14th) hoping to book the train from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig. A national rail strike? is that due to lack of workers?

Hi Patricia
The potential strike is over pay I believe.

If you need a backup plan then there is a good bus/coach service (Citylink - reservations needed in advance) from Glasgow to Skye, via Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh. However, if you are planning to rent a car on Skye anyway, then my advice would be to rent a car in Glasgow and drive up. The drive is fantastic. If you want to come over on the ferry with a car then you'd need to prebook the Mallaig to Armadale service, or you could take the historic Glenelg to Kylerhea ferry which doesn't require booking and runs from 10am to about 6.30 or 7pm depending on demand. Or of course there's the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.

You'll have more options in terms of car rental if you organise it in Glasgow too.
