Train from Liverpool to Edinburgh

We are flying out of Edinburgh, is there a direct train from Liverpool to Edinburgh? Or do I need to book to Glasgow then take the Scotrail to Edinburgh?

Just start at www.nationalrail.co.uk. Let the railroads decide the transfer point. I don't see any direct trains off hand. Avanti West Coast trains have one change at Wigan North Western. TransPennine Express trains change at Lancaster.

Go with the Avanti Express train even though the trip is longer. Avanti has nicer, more comfortable trains and are more reliable. The last two Transpenine Express trains I had reservations for were cancelled. And on basically the same route. (Manchester to Edinburgh).

I hope you are not planning to travel to Edinburgh on the same day as your flight out.

There are direct trains from Liverpool to Glasgow, but not to Edinburgh. I believe that transpennine express were planning direct Liverpool to Edinburgh trains pre COVID, but I guess those plans were dropped.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't recommend a change of trains in Glasgow on this journey because trains from Liverpool arrive at Glasgow Central stn whilst most trains to Edinburgh (particularly the express ones) depart from Queen St stn, so you would have to transfer stations in the city centre.

As mentioned, if you search for a ticket it will provide a routing with a change point (most likely Manchester, or perhaps Carlisle) so you can generally just go with that.

I guess you've maybe booked flights already, but Manchester airport is a lot more accessible from Liverpool than EDI airport - Iirc there is an hourly train from Liverpool Lime St stn direct to the railway station located at MAN airport and the journey takes just under 90mins.
