No, you can purchase the ticket at the station. However buying in advance is liable to save you money, sometimes quite a bit of money.
No need, but you can buy it the day before to avoid a possible queue at the ticket window when you need to get that train.
Or take the noon coach and save even more money.

trains run every 15 minutes as do the buses and no need to buy either ahead of time. be aware the train journey at the moment is taking a bit longer as there is work being done to queen street train station and trains are going to the lower level.
Interested in the recommendation of coach (bus) rather than train between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Years ago we took a coach from London to Warwick Castle in November. We vertually had it to ourselves and could sit up top for a delightful view of the courtryside. Might we enjoy a similar experience traveling between these two Scottish cities? The pleasant journey would be even more valuable that the boost of being a bit more economically smart.
no , bus is likely to be busy and the journey is along a boring motorway much of which is being reconstructed and with a stop at the ugliest motorway service station in the country..
OK---- I think I've figured out that I take the Airport Express into Glasgow. So do I take ScotRail or Virgin Train?
Thanks for the responses!
Scotrail, trains run from Queen street station every 15 minutes or 30 minutes depending on the time of day.
The Airport bus stops right outside Queen street station , they should announce this on the bus but just ask the driver to let you know when you get to the stop.
You can buy tickets in the station from the counter or the many automated machines.
We took the train today from Edinburgh to Glasgow today & back. Super easy to catch the train @ Waverly station & @ Queen' station for the return. The roundtrip for 2 was only 25.5 pounds. The train staff was very helpful & we could not have had a better experience. We will see how it goes tomorrow to St Andrew's...
