Train from Edinburgh to London

Looking for advice about taking the train from Edinburgh to London. We are doing the RS Best of Scotland in 13 days. Then we are signed up for the RS Best of London in 7 days. There is a 3 day gap between tours. We would like to go to London and see some of the things not covered by the tour.

Take the 4 hour train from Edinburgh Waverly to Kings Cross. Stay at the Premier Inn.

Explore Granary Square, dine at Dishoom, walk along Regents Canal. Go to little Venice, visit Kenwood House in the Hampstead Heath, visit Camden Lock Market, enjoy evensong at St Brides church….lots to see and do in London….

LNER from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross. Get ‘Advance’ tickets in advance (available from about twelve weeks before departure date). They do tie you to a specific train - you can’t change your mind once booked, at least not without a lot of money changing hands in LNER’s favour, so think carefully before choosing. You’ll also probably save a bit of money if you travel off peak - this differs dependent on area and operator but normally you board after 9.30 am and disembark before 3.30-4.00 pm. LNER website will give you accurate info. Journey time is between four and five hours. Do reserve your seats when booking, the trains are very full most of the day.

There will be a buffet car on board but it doesn’t hurt to take your own food and drink aboard. You can buy at your leisure economically or at least more economically than the ‘captive audience’ prices they will charge you on the train!

It's an easy train ride and takes you from city center to city center. You could also consider stopping off in York for a day and then heading down to London. I wouldn't mess with the sleeper. I would shoot for day light hours in the north if your going straight through as you'll get nice view of the York Cathedral.

on the same route as the big boys, LNER, is the smaller new kid on the block, lumo. Can be cheaper, less frequent, skips York, slower. https://www.lumo.co.uk/

Under the skin both are interesting - LNER is now government owned and operated, lumo tries to be uber-cool but is actually (it never says on its website) part of the mega group First Group who run trains and buses all over the UK.
