i am booking a bespoke one day private tour to take us around to Stirling Castle, a distillery, Doune Castle and Trossachs. We are working with a small company. They ask us for a 20% non-refundable deposit to reserve the date, which I know is standard. But I was surprised they are asking for the rest of the payment 6 weeks ahead of the date. Is that standard practice with one-day private tours?
Yes, especially when your tour guide (small company) already has to book and pay for the entrance fees to these attractions. We live in uncertain times, There is also a great danger posed by American credit card companies, which, in the event of cancellations by their customers, make it impossible to collect the outstanding amounts... so prepayment protects the travel industry.
As stated above, it is standard. I would definitely cover that under your travel insurance if you can.
