Timing of the train from London to Edinburgh

Hello We are flying in to London from Boston, Massachusetts, arriving Saturday April 19th (of Easter weekend) at 7:20 am. I need to make reservations on a train from London to Edinburgh. We would like to arrive in Edinburgh with some part of the day left to see things such as Edinburgh Castle, which will be closed on Easter Sunday. I am unsure of how much time I should leave for getting from Heathrow, Terminal 5 to London (Kings Cross, I believe) to get the train. I was thinking of reserving the 10:30 train. Am I cutting it too close? Of course, the train could arrive late, and then I'll just have to do what ever is best in that moment. I also thought I read that if I download the app for the Rail system, I could go into it and cancel my train and book another one. So, questions are - is an arrival time of 7:20 and a train time in London of 10:30 feasible? and Any advice on if I miss my reserved time on the train?

Thank you!
Suzanne

The way to do this is to book a 70 minute flex single for £97.10 on the 1130 train.

That allows you to travel on the 1030, 1100, 1130, 1200 or 1230 trains.

Then go into the Seat Reservation function on the LNER App and book seats on the 1030 train. Thus you will hold reservations on the 1030 and 1130 trains.

IF you are on time and IF the e-gates are working then you should be at KX by around 0930.

If you find you need reservations on one of the other trains they can be made until 5 minutes before travel, and Kings Cross station has free WiFi if you don't have data.
However LNER is expected to be very busy due to closure of the West Coast Line via Carlisle so last minute seats are not a certainty, and you may end up standing.
You could be very selfish and book seats on the 1100, 1200 and 1230 trains as well.

To save time Heathrow Express currently has early bird fares of £17 (and two together gets you a third off those fares) to Paddington then tube or bus #205 or taxi Paddington to Kings Cross.

Buy a Two Together Railcard and save a third off these fares- https://www.twotogether-railcard.co.uk/

The last entry to the Castle at 1600 is already sold out but it IS open on Easter Day.

Hello
This is amazingly helpful. Thank you so much! I've learned so much reading this and will now work on it accordingly.

If you're already at the airport, why don't you get a flight to Edinburgh? Much easier and faster.

Unless you have a real desire to take the train, I would suggest taking a plane.

For the train, you're looking at taking the tube/Elizabeth Line/Heathrow Express to Kings Cross--which might include changes--and then a four and a half hour journey on the train to Edinburgh.

And that's after a six plus hour flight from Boston.

It gets even better. You are arriving at Terminal 5. I'm guessing British Airways. Well, BA offers numerous flights from Terminal 5 to Edinburgh. You wouldn't even have to change terminals to fly BOS-LHR-EDI.

If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, include the flight to Edinburgh. This way it becomes one ticket and if your arriving plane is late, BA will get you on the next available flight for no extra charge.

If you were already in London, I would suggest the train. But at the airport????

Hi We already bought our tickets into London. I will take a look at the flight options, if I can add on at this point.

Thanks.

Research the flights then call BA to see if they will add it to your original reservation. Quite often tney will.
