Three nights in Pitlochry during June without car

My daughter and I are staying in Moulin from June 16th to June 19th. We just learned that she cannot rent a car with automatic transmission since she is only 22 years old. Does anybody have experience travelling in that region without car whether by public transportation or with guide

Hi, daniel j,

Your daughter should be able to hire a car in Scotland. The minimum age is 21, but renters between the ages of 21 and 25 may have to pay a "young drivers" surcharge. Check with the majors - Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, etc. She may have to hire from one of the major airports, but she wouldn't have to drive in the city. The"young driver" surcharge may triple the cost of the rental, however, so public transportation may be much the cheaper option.

Pitlochry is well served by bus and train. The main north-south ScotRail service goes right through Pitlochry, as do local and regional buses. Moulin is a bit outside Pitlochry, so it may involve taking a local bus in to town, then regional/national service from there. The number 24 Stagecoach bus stops in Moulin frequently in the morning, then once an hour from about 10:00 a.m. onwards. From Pitlochry, it's possible to go just about anywhere in Scotland by bus or train. However, the 24 bus continues on to Ballinluig, with connecting service to Dunkeld and Perth.

Plus there's taxi service. It's usually best to arrange for a taxi ahead of time, giving a specific time and pick up location.

Best wishes,

Mike (Auchterless)
