things to do while waiting for the overnight train in Fort William

I want to reserve bus tickets from Portree to Fort William for Sunday, April 27th (where we will take the overnight train to London). This will be the last part of our trip to Scotland. I can take an 8 am bus getting in at 11:09 to Fort William or a 10:35 bus, getting in at 13:41. I already have made plans to visit The Caledonian Wool Company in Fort William (they are closing at 4 that day). I read that the museum nearby is closed on Sundays (and I emailed them and they confirmed they will be closed that Sunday). I see there is the Ben Nevis Distillery in Fort William and it will be open. Is there much to do, near the train station in Fort William and/or nice places to just sit and enjoy the scenery. Or, should we try to get over to the Nevis Range Mountain gondola (I believe it is 6.5 miles from the train station)? Or other ideas?
Thanks!

As well as the above, on your way to or from the distillery, you could take a Mallaig train one stop to Banavie for the railway swing bridge over the canal and Neptune's staircase flight of locks.

It's nice down at the ferry pier for the Loch views (although the ferry to Camusnagaul doesn't run on a Sunday).

If you caught the early bus you could take the lunchtime service train either to Mallaig and back (if you haven't 'done' the line) or to Glenfinnan, get off there, have lunch, see the monument, wander down to the Loch then the mid afternoon train back, getting off at Banavie as above.

The restaurant that used to be at Fort William Pier has moved to the new Highland Cinema and has had very good reviews- https://highlandcinema.co.uk/restaurant-bar/

I think the Gondola is only worth doing if the weather is good, so would decide that on the day.

Bear in mind that the Sleeper Lounge at the station opens at 4pm, and you will be boarding soon after 6pm.

Hello
Thank you! This is great information. We are taking the trains from Glasgow to Mallaig earlier that week. I didn't realize about the sleeper lounge. Good to know. The restaurant menu looks great. Once again, thank you!

There is a nice bookshop in Fort William.

Just a little bit out of town (bus? taxi?) is the headquarters of the Highland Soap Factory with their delightful shower gels, lotions, etc and attached cafe.

Oops in looking I see they also have a smaller shop in town.

All three are open on Sundays.

The walk to Inverlochy castle would take you right to the Highland Soap HQ shop and cafe.

prior to the train, there is a Morrisons supermarket right by the station that is generally open late for last minute essentials. The cafe though shuts at 5pm.

There is also a Premier Inn including a restaurant 350 metres from the railway station and a McDonald's on the route, 200 metres, for food before the train.

The McDonald's in Ft William is the one in traditional McDonald's land, and also IIRC was for a while the only one with signs in Gaelic.

If you’ve got some time to kill before the sleeper, Fort William actually has a few gems! Grab a bite or a drink at The Grog & Gruel—cozy pub with good food. You can take a walk down to the loch for some peaceful views, especially around sunset. The West Highland Museum is also worth a quick visit if it’s still open. If you’re into hiking, a short wander up Cow Hill gives you a great view over the town and Ben Nevis. Otherwise, just soak in the scenery—Fort William’s pretty charming in the evening light!
