The Shetland Islands

I am looking for advice, especially for restaurants. It seems the staff shortage has hit the islands--just like the rest of the world. I had lunch in a high end ish Chinese restaurant, and was sorely disappointed. I am reverting to sandwiches in the room for a while--many restaurants have limited hours and many customers. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Unfortunately, my favorite place when I was there In 2010… montes bistro is gone.

We are at a Chinese place…. Did not like it either.

There were several Indian restaurants. One was great. Down the street from ad awesome bar called Douglas arms. Ate at queens hotel, pizza place, hotel in Scalloway, hotel at sun burg. Cafe on the way to Eschness (sp)?. There was a pizza place. St ninan’s had a cafe. But these were all 12 years ago.

I am heading back end of June.

Guess you could google restaurants in Lerwick

There are many excellent restaurants and cafes throughout the Shetland Islands. Frankie’s in Brae has some of the best fish and chips in the UK. My wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary at the Scalloway Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Peerie Shop cafe in Lerwick is my favorite place for breakfast. The cafes at the Shetland Museum and Mareel are both good for lunch fare. Braewick cafe on the road to Eshaness is also a good lunch stop. Victoria’s Tea Room in Haroldswick is our favorite on Unst. But by far my favorite is Da Cake Fridge on the road between Aith and Voe. It’s a refrigerator on the side of the road stocked with whatever the owner decided to bake that day with an honesty box to drop payment into. Be early for some of the most delicious cakes and treats you’ll ever have.

I’m sure there are many more excellent choices in Shetland but these are places my wife and I have eaten during our visits there.

Craezer-- I'm planning a trip to the Shetlands next year and wondered about accommodations. I'll be there in mid-June. Any suggestions for Lerwick? I plan to go to museum there among other things.

Craezer,. First off my absolute favorite place to stay was the Queens. Man that view is absolutely spectacular. (I don't have the names of things memorized, so bear with me) We rented a car to visit a bunch of places: south to Sanbrow (sp?) Head lighthouse. Spectacular bird and water animal views. St. Ninias was a spectacular view and walk. There is another light house on the west coast that is absolutely spectacular. The people were all very kind and enormously helpful especially at the tourist information center. Start there. Have fun! The best trip I have had in a long time.

Its Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. The cliffs are a good place to spot puffins.

There is Jarlshof and also Old Scatness Broch near the airport.

In Lerwick there is Clickimin Broch. Scalloway Castle and museum

Don't miss the Crofthouse museum or Lunna Kirk.

If time allows take the boat trip to Mousa broch.

Make sure you visit some of the other islands too - Bressay is just a few minutes on the ferry from Lerwick. Yell and Unst can be done in a (long) day trip from Lerwick.

Have a look at the Undiscovered Shetland website for more ideas.
