The Red Squirrel of Pitlochry

The Red Squirrel of Pitlochy should sound like a monster of myth and legend. This legend started last weekend when a red squirrel got caught in a Gregg's bakery in Pitlochy. Red squirrels are our native species of squirrel and are heavily protected, our most common squirrel is the American Eastern Grey Squirrel which is a very successful (and cute, lets be honest) invasive species.
It is illegal to trap and harm a red squirrel, it is illegal punishable by prison to release into the wild a grey squirrel. (Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981)

What is interesting is this story would have been so different if it had been a grey, rather than a red squirrel.
