The 'Jacobite' Steam Train Fort William to Mallaig 2026

Tickets for the Jacobite train are still not available on the West Coast Railways, nearly 3 months behind schedule, and just 6 weeks before operations are due to start. Nor are they available for any of the other trains WCR runs- the Dalesman and the Scarborough Spa Express.

However this week a poster has been installed at Fort William Station- the running dates are scheduled to be 1 April to 23 October.

At the time of issuing the poster ONLY the morning train is confirmed as running. the afternoon train is unconfirmed.

And, yes, they have booked the train paths for both the afternoon public train and the unadvertised evening charter train, but I repeat that it is not confirmed either of those trains will run at the time of writing.

Yet again, the issue is the lack of train cars which meet the required safety standards- standards which other operators with identical train cars running on the main line have been able to meet, including the Scottish Rail Preservation Society (SRPS).

Adult returns will be £69 in standard class this year and £105 in first class (or a private table for two £229 return), plus the booking fee.

As in previous years a few seats are held aside for sale on the day at the train side by the guard- CASH payment only.

This is the latest update on the Jacobite train, from the ORR (the Rail Regulator) on 23 February-

West Coast Railways (WCR) have now agreed to fit Central Door Locking to their Mark 1 train cars used on the Jacobite- 27 years after they were first required to do so. However they require several years to do so, due to a claimed lack of funds.

Accordingly an application has been submitted to the Rail Regulator for yet another further exemption. The ORR state that they require a minimum of 4 months to assess the application (ie- to the end of June), but there is a further dispute as the application has not been submitted by WCR, but by a new leasing company wholly owned by WCR. Thus the 4 month clock has not yet started to count down, due to resolving that discrepancy.

So, as things stand, it is not possible to start the operating season in time, unless WCR use more modern (and thus safety compliant) train cars as they did in 2025- cars which were unpopular and had serious maintenance issues. They now have 4 weeks to do that.

The only other rail operator with such non compliant train cars running on the National network is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Whitby- but with fully agreed mitigation measures (not least low speed) which they fully comply with.

I begin to wonder - no, tell a lie, I have wondered for a long time - if WCR has any real interest in obeying the law and caring for the safety of their fare paying passengers...

I wonder how they can be so short of dosh.

Nigel

I just looked up Wootton Bassett 2015 - would you believe it, that was WCR as well.

Wow! I'm so glad I came across this discussion. I will be travelling in Scotland this summer, and had been looking forward to a small train excursion on the scenic route covered by WCR. Hmmmm. I'm now rethinking that. Thank you for posting this! Susan

there are frequent normal ScotRail trains on those very tracks. Only things missing are the smoke and steam from the front end and the old carriages. Scenery is the same. Oh, and you don't get a light-blue 1962 Ford Anglia 105E Deluxe flying around the train. Oh well.
