Stormy Weather

I had been reading that it has been a rough summer in Scotland this year, but when I heard about the evacuation of the camp site at the Tiree Music Festival that a colleague is attending and then saw this article I knew that things are rougher than any time I had visited. And, I even remember the Thistle Hotel requiring evacuation and the rail line between Aberdeen and Inverness getting shut down one year.

So, I wondered how are friends that are visiting Scotland this summer coping? Did you bring your hooded water proof jacket? Have you had to buy out the woolen shops of their sweaters to add to you layers? Are MC and Unclegus selling waders so you can get from your B&B to the car park? Or is. It all media hype?

Didn't you see Tiger Woods in his snorkel trying to play at the Open at the home of Golf?

You couldn't see the bunkers for the lakes.

I read that Celebrity Silhouette was unable to tender in Edinburgh yesterday due to weather. What a disappointment to miss a port, especially that one.

It has been a real mixed bag of weather over the last month or so.we have had high winds in Edinburgh over the last few days and there has been some damage to buildings. The open at St Andrews only 30 miles away has had lot a lot worse and the village of Aylth was flooded a few days ago. even this morning we have had lovely sunshine and heavy showers. It has been a bit colder than normal as well especially at night, don't worry if you hotel does not have air conitionners, just make sure they have the heating on.

You are taking me back a few years to an absolutely rotten day on Islay when we were sitting before a peat fire in the Port Charlotte Hotel having a dram.

Amazing wind the day before the rain. One player hit the ball gently while on the green (6 feet away from the hole), then the wind was so strong, the ball rolled for about an additional 10 to 15 feet. The player had a puzzled look on his face, like "what the heck".

Poor Tiger. It's looking like his best days are behind him.

Like unclegus, for us the weather has been a real mixed bag over the last couple of months. Currently bright and sunny, was raining hard during the night, and the temperatures have been up and down like a bungee jumping kangaroo.

At the same time the weather has not been unusual, just unusual at when it is!

As I sit in my NYC apartment with the fans blowing around the 90 degree Fahrenheit air that is laden with humidity, I dream of Scotland....

I feel ya! Having a bit of a heat wave here in San Francisco too - my house is not quite 90, but definitely not the nice cool mid-60s it usually is!

Scotland is looking good! Be there in a few weeks - though hoping NOT to have torrential rain! :)

Hope you cool off!

I was there a week ago. We experienced pretty much every kind of weather you could imagine, often on the same day. It's just like everyone says: be prepared for every kind of weather, you will probably experience all of it. I had brought warm clothes, gloves, rain jacket and hat, shorts, sunglasses, and warm weather clothes too. I used all of them and was glad I had them along.

FWIW I generally liked the cool, breezy, sometimes wet weather we experienced. None of this 90+ degree, excessive radiation crap that I came home to.

Checking flights to Scotland....It was 99 degrees in Nashville yesterday with a "heat index" where the temp plus humidity are combined--misery factor--heat index of 107. Typical July and August weather for Nashville and most of the south.

Same thing in the Washington DC area - 107 heat index. Counting the days to our trip!!

Happily, things are looking up, or rather down in NYC. We're back in the 80's and no humidity! But I still want to be in Scotland. :)

Pamela, I spent several years living in New York City, and was pleasantly surprised to find July and August there to be much more pleasant than in Nashville. Except for the muggings.

Ah, but the muggings have almost all moved to Chicago! I had lived in Chicago for several years followed by several years in Madison, so I have found NYC summers to be miserably hot and humid. In Chicago you can get to the lake front. I foolishly thought that the ocean was close enough to cool NYC. Not!

Pamela, I spent most of the money I should have been saving to take the train--Long Island Railway--out to Montauk some weekends. A long way to go, but worth it to be out at Montauk Point Lighthouse.
