I will be starting my trip in Edinburgh on the morning of 10/6. I would like to know if there are any lockers to store a backpack or small carry-on so I don't have to carry it around town until my room is ready for check in. I wanted to jump right in to the Royal Mile walk.

Not sure about lockers but can you see if your hotel will let you leave your bag. I have done this many times and on the rare occasion my room was ready but I was always able to leave my bag.
There is a place to leave your luggage at the Edinburgh train station but I would agree that you can just dropping it off at your hotel before you are able to checkin.
Just contact your hotel now and ask if they can keep your bag for you.
If you’re lucky, your room might even be ready!
Scots are very friendly and helpful.
