As we leave Isle of Skye driving back to Edinburgh we would like to break that drive in half with an overnight stop...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😊
Halfway will put you around Dalwhinnie, but it wouldn't be my choice for an overnight stop. You could carry on a bit further and stay in Pitlochry which is a lovely little place, or maybe Dunkeld.
We stayed in Pitlochry on that drive. One reason we stayed there was it allowed us to visit Edradour which was our favorite distillery (of the 4 we toured). The next morning (on our way to Perth to drop of the car and catch the train for Edinburgh) we walked around Dunkeld. We enjoyed that town as well.
If you decide to stay in Pitlochry I can recommend the Pine Trees Inn for an overnight stay. It is very nice and dinner there is good. Breakfast is included but not the dinner. Near Pitlochry is House of Bruar which is a fun place to browse. If you have time Blair Castle is in that area and well worth a visit.
Thanks everyone for your helpful tips!
We stayed in Nairn, just east of Inverness. On the first day out of Isle of Skye we visited Urquhart Castle, the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition, Culloden Battlefield, and (briefly, exterior only) Cawdor Castle. In Nairn we stayed at Tali Ayer B&B; highly recommended. Leaving Nairn the next day, we visited Glamis Castle.
Nairn is lovely but most definitely not a good place to stop if you're looking for something halfway between Skye and Edinburgh. You would still have a 4 hour drive from Nairn to Edinburgh, whereas Dunkeld or Pitlochry would put you in good range for Edinburgh.
