Stockbridge vs Dalkeith Road lodging

Has anyone stayed in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh? How does it compare to the Dalkeith Road area in terms of neighborhood amenities, transportation to Edinburgh, and restaurants?

Thanks in advance!

I was born in Stockbridge and would move back there tomorrow if I could afford a house in the area, wonderful part of the city, loads of bars and restaurants as well as some quirky shops and nice cafes. the city centre is walkable from there but loads of buses to various parts of the City.
Dalkeith Road is a main road in and out of the city and the top end near the Commonwealth Pool is a decent enough area, the city centre again is walkable but also lots of buses into the city from there.
You have a few bars a restaurants on the upper part of Dalkeith road but a few hundred yards away is the start of the main drag into the city centre and loads of bars cafes restaurants and shops in there.loads of other places in the side streets off this area.
personally Stockbridge would be my choice but if I got a great deal for dalkeith road I would consider it.

We're going for first time this fall. Booked in York Place because we want to be able to reach Stockbridge and other areas near New Town...rather than just focusing upon Old Town. Way we made decision where to stay as based upon our research on types of places we want to visit (pubs, artists, architecture, entertainment, friends who live in Stockbridge). Most of all, New Town had easier access to transportation options not only within Edinburgh but also for surrounding areas of interest.
Hope that helps!
