Our current itinerary brings us to Edinburgh for 4 nights where we will ultimately rent a car for the rest of our explorations of Scotland. While in Stirling we will visit the castle, and on Saturday we will experience the Highland games. We arranged lodging there for 3 nights, but while reading Europe through the Back Door we were just reminded of the battle of Callodan and the historic sights in Innverness. Admittedly we have become devoted fans of Outlander, appreciating the Scots' struggle for independence. The 2 and a half hour drive could be a lovely, worthwhile excursion. Our next respit will be two nights in Inverarary, just over 3 hours drive back southwest, before heading to the Isle of Mull for 3 nights for 3 nights at a nature reserve.
The drive from Stirling to Inverarary may be plenty of Scottish countryside and views of the famed Scottish Lochs.
So, to linger the full 3 nights in Stirling, or take the long roundabout from Stirling to Inverness for a night and then to Inverarary? That is our question.
I have been to Culloden, and I would not take a long drive to get there as it is not that spectacular even though it might be evocative if you have dead clan members who died there; otherwise it is more like a cemetery than anything else. Also you can see most of Stirling in an afternoon. I liked Inverarary: it is the headquarters of Clan Campbell so beware!
