Staying in Edinburgh near Royal mile or staying in the countryside?

There are 4 Adults spending 5 nights in Edinburgh and trying to decide Airbnb (which I did find near the Castle on Royal Mile) or staying in countryside (someone suggested Callander). We weren't renting a car but if we stay countryside we would need to. Suggestions on which choice?

Is this your first time to Scotland?
Are you city folk or country folk?
For ease and convenience, the city has lots of attractions! But, the countryside is beautiful.

Can you maybe do a day trip to the borders area?

We live in the city but love the country too. My husband use to live in Prestwick as a young boy but we haven't really seen any of Scotland. We could rent a car for the day and see the countryside, just wasn't sure which was easier?
Thanks, Sandy

I'd stay right in Edinburgh. I think it is easier to stay in the City and daytrip out to the country (e.g., rent a car at the airport for a day trip where you don't have to drive downtown; hire a guide; take a tour bus). I stayed in an AirBnb right on the Royal Mile last July with my wife and son and it was wonderful. The Royal Mile is very busy during the day as you might imagine, particularly toward the Castle, but even at a busy time of year for tourists it was much quieter at night (which I was pleasantly surprised by). Walking in Edinburgh is easy. There's lots of interesting neighborhoods that aren't far from the Royal Mile, and even though the main touristy area is small a Hop on Hop Off bus ticket can be a good way to easily expand your exploration footprint. However you work it, you'll love your time there - Scotland is magical!
