Hi, flying into Edinburgh next June 2017. Trying to get a plan together. I would love to see some standing stones! Where are the closes one to Edinburgh? Thanks.
Are you an Outlander fan? :-)
I've no idea what the closest standing stones to Edinburgh are, but there are standing stones, cairns and brochs all over Scotland.

Depending on how much time is available to you an entire itinerary could be devoted to travelling around Scotland looking at standing stones. Whether you would find Jamie Fraser as well is a different matter :-)
Yes, I am an Outlander fan and I do love Jamie. But I really would love to see some standing stones. I do photography and would love to get some pics. Thanks for your help.
No problem. Like I say, Scotland is full of standing stones :-)
Not sure how much time you have, or how far you'd consider venturing beyond Edinburgh, but you can fly quickly from there up to Kirkwall, the main city in Orkney, a collection of islands north of the Scottish mainland. Among other fantastic sites in and around Orkney is the Ring of Brodgar, a huge circle of massive standing stones, although some of them have fallen over and some are now just big stumps, but a couple dozen are still standing. We rented a car, but your can visit sites with an arranged tour, as well...or rent a bicycle?
If you take the ferry from Uig, Skye to Lewis, you can visit Callanish, one of the outstanding stone circles. The stones are quite tall and reddish, at least in certain lights. Another area which is full of standing stones, including some henges, is the Kilmartin Glen. Near Culloden, are the Clava Cairns, which feature heavily in the Outlander books. Castlerigg, in the English Lakes District, is also outstanding, if you are interested in going a bit south.
