St. Andrews to Edinburgh

What is best way to get back and forth without a car? Would it be worthwhile to rent a car for a two day trip to St. Andrews?

Probably the easiest and cheapest way would be to take a bus from Edinburgh to St Andrews. The St Andrews bus station is very conveniently located in town. St Andrews doesn’t have a rail station, but Leuchars is just a few miles away. If you want to take the train, you get off at Leuchars. You can then take either a taxi or bus from the Leuchars train station the rest of way into St Andrews. Both are readily available from the Leuchars rail station. There’s also the option of having a taxi transfer between Edinburgh and St Andrews. There are several companies in St Andrews that do this, but this would obviously be the most expensive alternative. You won’t need a car in St Andrews. The town is delightfully walkable and taxis are readily available if you wish to go a bit further afield. Our daughter just graduated from there so we’ve made many trips back and forth between Edinburgh and St Andrews and never had a car.

You can indeed take the train from Leuchars to London. See https://www.thetrainline.com/train-times/leuchars-to-london-kings-cross

As for whether to have a rental car in St. Andrews, the town itself is walkable and (if I recall correctly) most parking is not free. If you want to see the surrounding countryside, then naturally a car is advantageous. If your interests are in the town itself, then you should be fine with public transportation.
