Sorry if this is posted elsewhere and I missed it, but we're planning a trip to Scotland in August/September and would appreciate any tips on how to get a tee time to play the Old Course. Thanks.
Steve
No tips for the old course, but if all else fails, Himalaya Putting Course right next to the old course is a lot of fun.
Steve, have you looked at the St Andrews website? There is a very detailed explanation on the home page of the ways to obtain a tee time. It appears advance tee times for 2023 are closed. You can enter a balloting process 48 hours in advance of the day you wish to play and cross your fingers you are drawn. If you are a singleton, you can show up the day of and they will try to match you up with a twosome or threesome, but no guarantees.

Katheryne gave you the best advice. I can only add that as a single, my husband got up and was in line at the starter’s box at 5:00a.m. I think he was #6 in line and he got paired with a group that had a tee time after lunch. The two/threesomes have to accept having an additional player. He rented clubs and they were a quality set.
You can also befriend a local the night before in a pub and they may have an open time and invite you as a guest, which happens frequently as the locals love to share their gem with visitors. You can also check with various tour groups for $$ tee times (usually with lodging) but they may have a last minute opening from their allocation.
I realize your preference is the Old Course, but don't forget that St. Andrews has six other courses, not counting the Himalayas putting green. See

Since you are going to be in St. Andrews and you are a golfer, it might be better to play a course than to lose the opportunity because you didn't have luck with the ballot getting an Old Course tee time.
Thanks everybody for the good advice.

Get on St Andrews website and try and get a lottery pick, otherwise get to the caddy shack between 2-3am to see if you can get on sometime that day as it’s first come first serve.
