Sporting event in Edinburgh or nearby (late July). Suggestions?

I will be in Edinburgh for 3-4 days late July.
I LOVE sports and would like to attend a sporting even if possible. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much!

You might want to check out the Highland Games. They are maybe a bit like a track meet? Well if the band and dancers were also part of the meet. Here's a schedule for the summer. It's got links off the individual games. The St. Andrew's Games are certainly within reach of Edinburgh.

Whoa! The Commonwealth Games are in Glasgow-- a quick train ride away.

And Scotrail is adding extra coaches to the commuter trains running between Edinburgh and Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games.

It is a big deal and well worth attending.

I heard that the weather has been fantastic for the start at any rate and that the opening night was quite something. :) Plus a lot of medals for Scotland!

Pam, the first two days were about 30 degrees. Not sure what that is in farenheit, about a billion I think, Not a cloud in the sky. Today has been cloudier with a bit of rain but still 25. And home town advantage is great! I have my tickets, my space infront of the BBC and a lawn that needs cutting. It can keep.

Update, as of today Scotland is 3rd in the medal table after 1) Australia and 2) England, and has had the best medal haul it has had in the Commonwealth Games.

How lovely. I remember when there was the possibility of the Olympics coming to Chicago. The Marathon would have been run in Wisconsin near Madison, where I lived. I'm still a bit crushed that it didn't happen. It sounds like you're really enjoying the Games.

I did not know about the Games when I booked my flight to Edinburgh...I am now back from Scotland.
I am so thankful that I learned about the Games through this forum...I got to go cheer on Rugby teams! It was AMAZING! :)
Very well organized from my experience!

Val, glad you liked it. And the Rugby Sevens are joining the Olympics from Rio 2016, which means, given the relative strength of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa in the Rugby Union world you possibly saw the first Olympic medalists.
