Southern Scotland

Five days in the South. Wants to spend time in the Borders and see other parts of the South, but try to do it from one base. Any particular town that would be best to base in? Easy to move around from? We are not looking to rough it. End of our trip, so we'd like a nice town and a nice place to stay. Thoughts? Any help would be appreciated.

Larry, did you look at any of the places suggested in your earlier post? Let us know what you liked or didn't like about them and we can probably give you more suggestions. It's hard when these are so similar.

As Pam says, can you define 'south'? The south of Scotland is quite large and not easy to get around. There is probably enough to see in the Borders for 5 days, but to give you an idea of the scale the south of Scotland parliamentary region covers both the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway council areas and stretches into East Lothian, South Lanarkshire and South Ayrshire as well.

So it could make sense to immerse ourselves in the Borders and really get to enjoy it rather than try to see all of the south?

If could make sense if what is in the Borders is what you want to see. You've also got the possibility of going into Northumbria and seeing Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Hadrian's Wall or easy reach back up to Edinburgh. The main issue is it is not that easy to go east to west and vice versa at that point in the country, it is much easier moving north south.
