Skye Rooms Facebook group is closing down

I know that the Skye Rooms Facebook group (in operation since 2015) has often been recommended as a way of finding last minute accommodation on the Isle of Skye. I just wanted to let you know that the admins of the group have decided to close it, having found it difficult to moderate and “police” following the introduction of the Short Term Let Licence requirement. There have apparently also been recent incidents of tourists thinking they had secured accommodation and parting with deposits only to discover the accommodation didn’t exist. There were more than 20k members of the group and for most people it operated really well, so it’s a shame to see it disappear.

I see that a new Facebook group has already been set up, but it has very few members at present and I couldn’t currently recommend that route for anyone seeking last minute accommodation on Skye.

Thanks for letting everyone know, Jacqui. That is a shame but I guess I understand their concerns. Hopefully most travelers will book early enough that they won't need this additional resource.

I saw that post Skyegirl. I don’t know how the admins kept up with it all.

The recent spate of non existent bookings seemed to be with AirBnB.

What struck me being a member of that group is the number of people posting that they needed “two rooms for five people tonight or “I’m on the bus to Skye now and need a place to stay tonight” just boggled my mind.

Also, I learned a lot of places won’t accept bookings for just one night on Skye.

Also, I recently stayed at the Uig Hotel and ended up booking all my dinners for 8pm. The amount of walk ins they were turning away at 8pm because they didn’t have reservations also boggled my mind.

So, for those of you that like spontaneity, Skye is not the place for that. It will be even more difficult now without that group.
