Skye Roads

What are the roads like in Skye, are there two lanes?

Hi, gdknix. Don't worry—not everyone knows how to use Street View on Google maps.

In answer to your question, it depends. :-) There are a number of roads with two lanes; for example, the coastal road from Armadale all the way up to Portree and beyond is a two-lane road that moves somewhat quickly (unless you get stuck behind a camper van).

But there are a number of single track roads throughout Skye where you need to be careful when driving. There is a certain etiquette involved in driving on these single track roads especially when it comes to using the passing places (which are numerous). So it pays to watch some YouTube videos or tutorials on driving in Scotland. Here are a couple of sites that give good advice:

It's actually not the two lanes or single track bit that is of most concern at the moment here in Skye, but the condition of the road surfaces. There are so many potholes and bits of road where the surface is seriously degraded. The best bit of advice I can give you (as a local dealing with these roads every day) is to stick carefully to the road and not to be tempted to get too close to the verges or to go off the edge (as tourists sometimes do on single track roads to avoid having to reverse to a passing place). If you do clip the road edge you might easily end up with the wrecked tyre as the edges are very sharp and uneven. I probably see about 5 cars each day with wrecked tyres! Do be really careful.

Mardee's advice on single track road driving is really important, so do ensure you know what to do on single track roads as you won't be able to explore Skye (or many other parts of the highlands) without correctly using single track roads.
