Skye accomodations

We are planning on traveling to Skye for 2 days in mid September. I have scoured the internet and contacted numerous B&B and almost every place is saying that they are booked with the exception of a couple that either look a little rough or are very expensive. I was wondering if this is normal to be fully booked 6 months in advance, or if there is some sort of event going on that I should be aware of.

This is quite normal for Skye. It is a victim of its own popularity.

My advice is to be persistent and keep looking. Contact the Tourist Information Centre in Portree and ask if they can help. Not all B&B's have websites and can operate a bit under the radar, so the TIC may know of availability somewhere on the island.

You could also ask any B&B's you are in contact with if they know of anyone with available rooms. Lots of networking goes in between accommodation providers, so this is something to keep in mind.

Also if you cannot get anywhere to stay on Skye, then look at places like Kyle of Lochalsh which is very close by. I had success in 2014 by securing a room via AirBnB located in the Kyle of Lochalsh and just drove over the Skye Bridge every day.

Yes, I had a hard time finding accommodations for my August 2015 visit. After finding a room I had to wire money to hold the reservation, which I have never had to do before.

If you're open to staying on the mainland about 10 min from Kyle of Lochalsh bridge, I can recommend Dornie Hotel. It's literally walking distance from Eilean Donan Castle. Affordable, clean, nothing fancy but very helpful staff and they run a very good pub/restaurant as well.

I couldn't find anything on the island, so we booked in Portree. have you looked into a B&B there? If you have a car, it shouldn't be a problem to be in Portree and visit the Isle of Skye.

You might also look at an AirB&B. I just didn't want to shop and cook and clean while we were on vacation. We have 3 nights in Portree in September.

Thanks everyone. After much searching I was finally able to find something. I am sure that we will have a great time along with the other 2 million people that will be there with us!
