Sites and attraction driving from Glasgow to Skye

My wife and I are planning a trip to Scotland, and we will be taking a car from Glasgow and driving to Skye and on the Isle of Skye. We would appreciate any comments on sights and particular drives that you may have discovered, any restaurants, and special places to stay, the lot (as it were). At this time, our plan is to be there for 5 days on Skye. Thanks

There are ancient brochs -- Dun Telve and Dun Toddan -- near Glenbeag. Not a typical tourist destination, but fascinating. I have visited these in the past and I am including a stop duirng my September trip. Not far from crossing to Isle of Skye as I recall.

Thanks so much. I will add these to our itinerary - and we will be there is September, as well.

From Glasgow airport, first of all, make sure to ask the rental car agent which signs to follow at the roundabouts leaving the airport to head to the Erskine Bridge and Loch Lomond. The signage is not self-explanatory. If you end up on the M8 motorway headed toward Glasgow and Edinburgh, you're going the wrong way.

As you approach Loch Lomond, there's a major roundabout which is your last chance to head east toward Edinburgh (which you don't want). Follow signs for Loch Lomond. The A82 will take you all the way to Fort William by way of Glencoe, which people often say is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Scotland. Just beyond Fort William, don't fail to stop at Old Inverlochy Castle (amazing view of Ben Nevis) and, in Banavie, the "Neptune's Staircase" locks at the western end of the Caledonian Canal.

You can drive from Fort William to Mallaig and take the ferry to Skye (Armadale) from Mallaig, or continue north on the A82 to Invergarry, where you turn off on A87 toward Isle of Skye and you'll pass through awesome mountain scenery. You can either take the Kyle of Lochalsh bridge or the Glenelg ferry. If you take the bridge, you'll drive through Dornie where Eilean Donan Castle stands at the confluence of three sea lochs. The Dornie Hotel has a great restaurant & pub.

On our trip 3 years ago, we approached Skye from the north, taking the Kyle of Localsh bridge over, but returned to the mainland 3 days later via the tiny Kylerhea-to-Glenelg car ferry, which ran only in the summer. The two brochs mentioned above are just a couple of miles beyond the ferry unloading point at Glenelg.

On Skye, we stayed at the Roskhill House B&B on the A863, just south of Dunvegan in the west of Skye. For a gourmet dinner one night, we reserved seats at the "chef's table," in the kitchen, at the Three Chimneys in Colbost along the B884, a super-narrow road. Driving home, we had to navigate past goats that were lounging on the relatively warm, paved roadway...don't have too much wine or whisky if you'll be driving home! The restaurant at the Dunvegan Hotel was also good, and their selection of ales was exceptional.

Doing Rick Steve's described counter-clockwise drive of the Trotternish peninsula, we didn't go all the way north along the A855 north of Portree, but cut to the west through the Quiraing to Uig on a most spectacular (and challenging) mountain drive.

Thanks so much - I especially appreciate the suggestions for dinner. We will look into those.
