Should I break journey between Inverness to Isle of Skye?

We are visiting Scotland in April and would like to know which would be more scenic and make better choice. We would be driving from Inverness to Isle of Skye.

  • We can drive from Inverness to Achnasheen, Kinlochewe, Torridon, Shieldaig and stay overnight at Applecross. Next day drive to Skye and stay. Third day we will leave for stay at Glencoe. This will give one night at Applecross and one night at Skye.
  • We can drive from Inverness to Skye directly and skip Achnasheen/Torridon. I can see 2 routes. This will allow us to stay 2 nights at Skye.
  • Third option may not be liked by many, but make it a long day. Inverness to Achnasheen, Kinlochewe, Torridon, Shieldaig and head to Skye. It is 133 miles. With stops it can take full day, but it will also give us 2 days at Skye.

Thanks.

Skye deserves more than 1 night! You will hardly habve any time to see anything there. If Torridonetc is a 'must' then ]go for option 3 . At least you will see ther scenery and still get a full day on Skye.

Torridon is not really a must see. I was just looking at some videos and blogs and considered it. As far I read, Sky is must me, so I can do nights there.

What route would you suggest from Inverness to Skye/Portree, considering that only Skye is must see for me and other places are flexible?

On our trip, we picked up the car in Inverness, and it absolutely poured rain the whole way to Skye. You may have clear weather, or the scenery might mostly be the wipers going across the windshield.

The rain had mostly cleared once we reached Skye, and the water gushing from the sides of the hills was a fantastic sight. Glad that we had 3 full nights on Skye.

Just saw your post from while I was typing up mine. We took the most direct route, the A82 south, along the western side of Loch Ness. There’s eventually an interchange where you switch onto the A87, which took us to Kyle of Localsh, and the bridge onto Skye. The A87 continues all the way to Portree, although we were staying farther west on the island.

If only Skye is a must see then the direct route, although it is not clear to me what you consider to be the direct route- I assume the A82/A87. route.

You could still take the A832/A890 route via Achnasheen to the Kyle, but omitting the A896 deviation via Torridon/ Shieldaig/Kinlochewe. Just stay on the A890 at Achansheen junction.
The A832/A890 is a very scenic route in itself, and essentially shadows the railway line. You could instead take the small diversion to Plockton.

Direct route I meant, skipping Achnasheen/Torridon. In that case I will start from Inverness and reach Skye/Portree, via whichever route is scenic/suggested.
I tried putting your suggested route on google map. If I read you correct then it is going this way and I should be in Skye by evening -
Inverness, A835, A832, Achnasheen IV22 2EH, A890, Kyle of Lochalsh, Plockton, Skye Bridge, A87, Skye.

It's horses for courses between the Achansheen and the A82 routes. The A82 route is the bus route and the way most people go because of having Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle on the way. Whereas the Achansheen road is 'just' dramatic scenery. But once you have left Garve nothing much really to stop for until the Kyle. If doing Plockton (a worthwhile diversion) you wouldn't go to Kyle and out again. There is a turn off just after the Stromeferry by pass down to Plockton, then round the peninsula to Kyle.
Achnasheen used to have a cafe (don't know if it survived Covid) and toilets, but nothing much else. And there is a hotel for lunch at Strathcarron- a nice place actually to eat at.

The one draw back with the Achnasheen route is that, while most of it is a good highway, there is a 5 or 6 mile single track section between Achnashellach and the Lochcarron junction which is single track with passing places.

Locals always take the Achnasheen route when going to and from Inverness. It's generally faster and in my opinion more scenic too. The slog alongside Loch Ness is no fun. There are few glimpses of the loch and often there are rental cars slamming on the brakes without warning to swerve on to the other side of the road to take photos. That section of the A82 is an accident blackspot.
