Sewing shops in the Highlands?

Hello RS Travel Friends,

I will be traveling with a small group in 2024. The guys will be golfing much of the time, and one friend (a spouse), is a very talented seamstress. She has interest in visiting any great sewing shops in the Highlands. I assume she is interested in sewing fabrics, and whatever else seamstresses desire!

We'll be traveling throughout much of the Highlands, including Inverness, Nairn, Dornoch, Portree, South Uist, Glencoe, and Aberdeen.

Any recommendations?!!

Hey Ron,
I've worked as a seamstress as a side job in NYC and was thrilled to visit Skye Silks! It's on the main road A850 just before coming to Dunvengan, from Portree, on the Isle of Skye. Jaine Mahon is the owner of this Silk Handweaving Studio - she works on looms, hand dyes all her silk and no two pieces are alike. My husband and I stopped into her studio after visiting Neist Lighthouse and Dunvegan Castle. Jaine was absolutely lovely and spent time with us, showing us how she uses her loom, explaining her dying process, etc. If you happen to be in that area, I highly recommend a visit! I'll second the rec for Skye Silks. I've been sewing for 60 years and found their fabrics to be delightful.

In Inverness, I remember seeing the Wee Fabric Shop, but did not have time to stop. And by the way, if you are asking around, I would not use the term "sewing" shop, but rather "fabric" shop. That said, most of the fabric shops are going to be in Edinburgh and Glasgow, so if you are traveling to either of those cities, you should find plenty of fabric shops.

Another option is when you get to each destination, open up Google maps, then key in "fabric shops near me" and see what pops up. You might find some shops in some of the smaller places you are visiting.

OR you could just look online now. Go to Google (search) and search for "fabric shops in Aberdeen" and you will come up with a list from Google like this one: https://www.google.com/search?q=fabric+shops+in+aberdeen

Try that with the other places you've named and see if you find anything. That's how I find most shops I am looking for.

Skye Silks is a great recommendation. Also here on Skye are Skye Weavers. They produce their own tweed fabric which they sell by the yard or meter. Skye Weavers website. In Portree is a small haberdashery shop called Isle of Skye Crafts

There is also Quilt Creations in Inverness (no website just a facebook page).
