I will be in Edinburgh and Inverness in May 2018. I would love to find a sewing/fabric shop to visit. Does anyone know of anything like that in either of those cities? Also, does anyone have recommendations on really good bakeries there?
For Edinburgh all I can say I am no expert on sewing but the haberdashery dept in the John Lewis dept stores has a huge choice of fabrics. this is part of a huge shopping mall currently undergoing redevelopment and is a building site at the moment though john Lewis is open and can be accessed from the bottom of Leith street. Jenners on Princes street also has a big haberdashery dept. On South Clark street is Edinburgh fabrics which has a huge range of stuff and is used a lot by the Asian community.
a lot of good traditional bakeries around but they will be in the local housing areas,my favourite is Fergussons on Moredun Park road, been going there for over 60 years now. there is a traditional bakers at the End of Clerk street where it meets Minto Street. You will see lots of Gregg bakery shops around , they are OK but very industrial produced food.
Emma that is the exact shop I mentioned, only a short distance from the city centre. My sister is a quilter too does some lovely stuff but she is based in the very south of England.
There used to be several fabric shops about Edinburgh called Renmant Kings but don't think they are around anymore. Also Hobby Craft have a number of outlets in the city.
I have use John lewis in the past for Upholstery fabric.there used to be a Renmant Kings in the Newington area but can't say I have seen any in Edinburgh recently.
Emma, thanks so much for posting that blog entry from TheFlyingNeedle. The places she mentioned sound like just the ones we would be interested in.
Unclegus, thank you for the bakery ideas. We will definitely look for them. Also, Edinburgh Fabrics sounds interesting. We'll look for that shop too.
