Severe train problems today

Due to forecast heavy rainfall there is a DO NOT TRAVEL warning today, as all services are suspended, on the Perth to.Inverness, Glasgow to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig and Carlisle to Glasgow and Edinburgh lines.

Avanti are running no services north of Preston, use transpennine to Carlisle, or northern to Lancaster and Oxenholme.

If you have to get to Glasgow use Scotrail via Dumfries from Carlisle, BUT you may get stranded without warning. There is an hourly bus service #X74 from Dumfries to Glasgow.

No alternative transport will run, as roads are also likely to be affected.

If you can delay travel by one day.

Up to 7 inches of rain is expected in one day

I live in Edinburgh and though we are not in the Severe weather warning area the rain is very heavy at the moment and has been since I got up over 2 hours ago, there has been some spells of torrential rain ,If that is what it is like for areas in the none warning area I would hate to think how bad it is north and west of where I live.

Here on Skye the rain is torrential even by our standards. A planned drive to Dunblane for a music rehearsal is cancelled as I hear the roads through the Highlands are not in good shape.

Skyegirl, still chucking it down here in south east Edinburgh, have not moved out the house today not even to put the stuff in the recycling bins at the back of the house.I have a friend coming over this afternoon to watch the Hearts Hibs derby, but hearing there is a pitch inspection at 10.30 so that may be called off.
I feel sorry for anyone on holiday in Scotland at the moment ,must be miserable.

and not a whisper of a mention on the National tea time BBC News

@Nigel to be fair that is normal, if it is not in the south east of England it did not happen. BBC, ITV and Channel 4 can all be guilty of it. It got some mention on ITV between the rugby this evening, the STV News was basically flooding, football called off, and Ireland v Scotland in Paris.

London was particularly balmy for October this evening, temperatures in the high teens and dry all day. It didn't happen. :P

Seriously though, I was watching the storm all day on netweather.tv rain radar and it did look pretty bad. I use that a lot to see what's happening with rain in the near future locally.

Scotrail still have major disruption today, Sunday, check before travel.

Also anyone travelling on the A82, A83 and A85 in Argyll and Bute is urged to check and replan routes, due to multiple landslides in the area. This will more than likely last into next week, and will need long diversions.

This means anyone travelling to Inveraray, Oban and other West Coast destinations, and also affects Scottish Citylnk buses.

Again it includes the Rest and Be Thankful- a long standing trouble spot over the years in adverse weather. There are plans to build an open tunnel at the Rest and be Thankful to overcome the issues.

Current roads update to Oban-
the A85 is closed at Loch Awe and the A82 at the Rest and be Thankful, also the A828 Oban to Fort William road between Connel and Ballachulish.

So the route from Glasgow to Oban is the A82 to Crianlarich, A85 to Dalmally, A819 to Inveraray, A83 to Lochgilphead then the A816 to Oban

Oban to Fort William is also via Lochgilphead, Inveraray, Dalmally, then A85 to Tyndrum and the A82 (or the Craignure and Fishnish ferries)- a very long way round, By chance the Tobermory to Kilchoan ferry is also cancelled currently due to engine problems.

Trains from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh are also cancelled with NO road replacement transport.

Camping out in the Cairngorms last few days.
Interesting wade/ walk back down the glen today including 3 of us having to " buddy up" to cross the most troublesome side burn.
The rain just about stopped at 6 pm or so in Aviemore which fir a few dwellings has a warning of risk if loss of life.
Better day tomorrow

Railway update- Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness- still closed- very limited bus replacements;
Dundee to Aberdeen- still closed due to flooding between Montrose and Stonehaven- no replacement transport- use Citylink/Megabus at own cost
Perth to Inverness- still closed due to flooding at several locations- extremely limited bus replacement which may not have the capacity for intermediate stations.

Keep checking with Scotrail.

No LNER trains to Aberdeen, Inverness, Perth and Glasgow (the latter from Edinburgh)

UPDATE- The Kyle and Aberdeen routes are now re-opened- so all tickets to Inverness are now valid via Aberdeen (change of trains).

BUT The line is now additionally closed between Stirling and Perth, due to worries over a viaduct. Thus Glasgow to Aberdeen trains start at Perth-local train to Stirling, then hourly bus to Perth.

The road remains closed at Rest and Be Thankful, after 13 landslides brought down thousands of tons of material.

The Perth to Inverness line opened at 9pm on Monday night in time to get one day train through and the delayed Caledonian Sleeper to London through.

So the only railway line still closed is from Stirling to Perth.

The Rest and be Thankful road has now reopened after the removal of 12,000 tons of mud and rocks, and all Scotrail routes are also now re-opened.

There is still a local road closure on the B828 between Rest and Be Thankful and Lochgoilhead due to flood damage- but that is only a short diversion via Cairndow and no-one on this forum ever seems to go to Lochgoilhead
