Scottish Highlands - what to do?

We'll be in Edinburgh for the festival in August and would like to spend a couple of days in the Highlands before we head home. If we base ourselves in Inverness, what would you suggest? We thought a Loch Ness cruise would be fun but we're traveling by train and won't have a car. Is there good public transport to tourist attractions or can anyone recommend a good tour that departs from Inverness city centre? Thanks in advance!

There are Loch Ness Boat Tours from Inverness. Check with your Hotel or B & B for recommended tours or public transportation to sites of interest. You may find that you don't have to travel so far from Edinburgh to get a taste of Scotland. Check the Visit Scotland Web site for some good ideas. I would recommend Stirling Castle, Lithlingow, and the Roslyn Chapel as day trips from Edinburgh. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park are very scenic with many historic sites.

Thank you. We have been to Edinburgh once before but didn't venture anyplace else but Glasgow. Looking forward to seeing more!
