Scotland trip--10 days--where to go?

We're flying into Glasgow.

The mandatory sites are Glasgow and Hadrian's Wall. In addition to that, we're open to suggestions. York perhaps? We're looking for something leisurely so we can enjoy the area.

(We've been to London multiple times.)

I assume you know that neither Hadrian's Wall nor York are in Scotland.

You say you want to "enjoy the area." What area, exactly, are you looking to enjoy? In 10 days, if you go south into England, you're not going to see much of Scotland.

How are you planning to travel? By car or public transportation?

And where you are you flying home from?

There is much to see in Scotland, but if you're heading to Hadrian's Wall and York you will be spending your time mostly in England.

Between Glasgow and Hadrian's Wall you could spend a few days in the Scottish Borders with castles, stately homes, historic abbeys and gardens.

When are you traveling? Will you have a rental car after leaving Glasgow?

You could easliy spend those 10 days exploringthe Borders, Northumberland and Hadrian's Wall. These are areas a bit off the usual tourist routes which head north for the Highlands (not realising just what good scenery they are missing...)

Will you have a car? You are flying into Glasgow but where are you flying out of?

Spend a 2-3 nights exploring Glasgow. Then head south on a74(M) to Carlisle where you pick up the western end of Hadrian's Wall. Plan for 2-3 hights in Haltwhistle/Hexham/Corbridge to visit Hadrian's Wall. Then head to Northumberland basing yourselves in Alnwick/Bamburgh/Seahouses to see something of Northumberland (including the Holy Island of Lindsifarne if tide times are suitable.) Then head north (either A1 of the slower 697) for the Borders stopping possibly in Melrose for the remainder of the stay.

Not only does this give you some glorious scenery, there re also ruined castles, abbeys and stately homes to enjoy.
