Suggestions for sleeping options for 3 adults (2 parents & adult child); open to sometimes reserving two rooms (hopefully 1 standard double and one "studio" or clearly 1 person room) or bigger 3-person rooms. Are they out there? Starting and finishing in Edinburgh, north toward Pitlochry; Aberdeenshire; Inverness area; Oban; across back to Edinburgh. Thank you

howeiler, how about taking a look at VRBO? There should be some options there, like a 2BR and a sofa or sofa bed.

I don't know when you plan to take this trip, but demand for lodging in the popular, seasonal towns is very high. That definitely includes Oban; I needed a simple twin-bedded room there in 2019 and really had to scramble even though I was looking at least six months in advance. Don't dawdle if you're traveling between now and, say, October.

We loved the Old Mill Inn in Pitlochry. They had rooms with a sofabed, or you could get two connecting.
