We plan to take a Rick Steves' tour to Scotland in May. After the trip we are considering going to Norway and taking a cruise in hopes of visiting small villages and seeing wildlife. Recommendations for a cruise line, small ship, education/wild life oriented. What is the best way to reach Norway from Edinburg?
Sad to say the only sensible way from Scotland to Norway is now by air.
Edinburgh Airport has Loganair flights to Stavanger on Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays and to Bergen on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
There used to be ferries but they have all gone. The overland route is now a 3 day odyssey- train to Newcastle, DFDS ferry overnight to Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) then overnight train to Copenhagen, thence via Gothenburg to Oslo and on to Bergen, Stavanger or Trondheim.
Aberdeen has flights to Stavanger and Bergen with Wideroe and SAS.
Try Hurtigruten.
Thanks. for the info.
By the way for 'Hurtiguten' Camborne meant Hurtigruten or Havila. They now share the Coastal route from Bergen to Kirkenes, and on any given night one or the other (but not both) will be running.
None of the International Cruise Lines do turn round cruises in Scottish Ports. Of the British Cruise Lines Ambassador are not sailing out of "Edinburgh" or Dundee before July next year. You could see if Fred Olsen Cruises are (or out of Newcastle)- they match all your criteria.
The other option is to find a cruise out of Southampton on a suitable vessel and fly from Scotland to Southampton Airport to join the cruise. Without a date of your ending the RS tour we are fishing in the dark.
You may even strike lucky and find one of the Hurtigruten ships returning from the summer Antarctic season with a UK port of call en route back to Norway for their summer season.
Although pricy Noble Caledonia may have a suitable cruise. They usually sail out of Aberdeen or Oban.
