Hello ! We're planning a trip from 10/5 (arrival Edinburgh) returning to the states on 10/19 from Dublin. We would appreciate any and all advice on itineraries and recommended transportation. We would like to ferry across but not sure which ports would be best .We would prefer not to drive if possible. Thanks!
Two years ago we flew from Edinburgh to Dublin on Easyjet. Took about four hours I seem to remember. Flight only about an hour but you have to factor in time getting to and from airport and two hours before flight to check in. Am sure ferry would really take much more time.
You can read about ferries between Great Britain and Northern Ireland here https://www.seat61.com/train-and-ferry-to-belfast.htm#london-to-belfast-via-cairnryan
There's a train/bus combo from Glasgow to Cairnryan across to Belfast
We just did that ferry trip yesterday. Bus left Glasgow 8:30, arrived Stena terminal about 10:50 (road construction delays), ferry departed 11:30, arrived about 1: 45, and a bus arrived and left at 2:15, we were at main bus station by 2:30, that final bus into Belfast is included in ticket. Calm rides, nice scenery from bus in Scotland. Easy connection to wherever once in center of Belfast.
There are no ferries from Scotland to Ireland, just ferries to Northern Ireland. Alternatively, you would have to travel to either Liverpool in England or Holyhead in Wales for a ferry to Dublin. It’s likely to take all day, no matter which route you use.
P & O Ferries are subject to disruption at present, due to an industrial dispute, which has put pressure on other operators.
Jennifer - While there are no ferries between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, Ireland is the name of the whole island.
