Scotland's National Nature Reserves anyone?

A lot of times people ask me what my favorite places in Scotland are. And, I'll always say that I love Edinburgh and visiting friends on the Black Isle. And I love the castles. But, there are handful of places that I also mention--Glen Affric, the area in Perthshire near Loch Tay and Ben Lawers, Loch Maree, Staffa....All of these spots are National Nature Reserves. I knew Glen Affric was, but I didn't realize that there were so many other places. Click here to see a list by region. I love walking in these places and now I know I have more to discover.

Has anyone been to some of the other reserves on the list? Which ones would you recommend?

Hi Pamela,

Thank you so much for posting this. We'll have 26 days in September, and although I've done a good bit of research, I hadn't come across the National Nature Reserves website until I clicked on your link. WOW, what a wonderful "find" this is, you could build an entire itinerary around visiting these!

There is an RSPB on Islay, the Loch Gruinart Reserve. Lots of birds and a great viewing facility with free binoclulars. We've always bought pins of flowers and birds there and payment is on an honor system that we help out.
