Planning a road trip in Scotland for late April/Early May. If you were traveling from Inverness to St Andrews, where would you stop and spend a night or 2 along the way? Not just to sleep, to experience.

Do you want mountain scenery or coastal scenery?
If the former then the A939 down through Grantown on Spey and Speyside stopping overnight in Braemar or Ballater is a good idea. Next day you continue on the A93 through Blairgowrie to Dundee and then over the Tay road bridge to St Andrews
If the latter the A96/A98 route through Elgin, Fochabers, Buchie and Banff to Fraserburgh for overnight continuing the next day on the A90 and A92 via Peterhead, Aberdeen, Dunottar Castle, Montrose and Arbroath to Dundee. There are any number of deviations off this basic route.
On this route there are many places you will come to that you will want to return to. To experience everything on this route would take you a week.
If you have several days to do the trip look at the NE250- a relatively new circular route (like the NC500, but quieter and on much better roads)- which takes in the best parts of both the above.

There are some things to see in the Pitlochry area, such as the Queen's View Visitor Centre and overlook. Near Perth is Scone Palace.
