Scotland loop by train/private transportation for 12 days

My husband and I are planning a trip to Scotland in May 2026. We begin in Edinburgh for two nights before moving on to Glasgow, Isle of Skye , Inverness, Pitlochry, Stirling and back one night in Edinburgh before flying out. Our question is, while in Edinburgh we planned a walking tour, Castle tour, plus free time to browse as we like. With that in mind, we are considering adding The Vaults History tour and/or a tour of the Royal ship Britannia. If we had to choose only one which would you choose?

These are both very good sites. I’d say it depends what your interest is- if you’re more interested in the modern royals and seeing how they live, visit Britannia- it’s a very personal home that gives a lot of insight. If you’re more interested in Edinburgh history and seeing how most people lived (and are not claustrophobic) I would tour the vaults, which are quite unique. Good luck deciding.

I’d choose Britannia. It’s a time capsule of how Elizabeth II and Philip lived while on holiday or overseas visits. The ship was also used to host UK diplomatic events overseas. The contrast between public and private areas is interesting.
