For weather, I'd suggest you be prepared for pretty much everything - and I do mean "prepared" and "everything." I was there in July, and we got a combination of every kind of weather I could imagine. Well, no tornados or locust swarms..., but just about everything else: warm sunshine, wind, drizzle, fog, snow, hard-driving sideways rain...sometimes several of these in rapid succession on the same day. The snow was very brief (and in the mountains) but the rain, fog, wind, and yes the sunshine - those were steady for hours at a time, then were gone for just as many hours.

Bring clothing and an attitude to handle all of these, you will need both.

I don't think any "attractions" close because of ordinary weather or due to it being April or May.

Just be ready for anything and you will do fine. It's a lovely place!

We visited in mid April. It was a little rainy but mostly OK sweater/ fleece weather. Bring a scarf or knit hat. Most of the "attractions" should be open by then. Check Visit Scotland or Historic Scotland to check places you would like to visit to check the times of operation. We enjoyed April and May because we could B & Bs without reservations.

Check the statistical climate data and see for yourself:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/regional-climates
The UK Met office provides both "averages" and "extremes" of temperature, precipitation etc. Remember that the norm is something other than average.

We enjoyed Edinburgh and the Highlands during a mid-May visit and found attractions we were interested in open.

Expect to get rained on if you are visiting for a week.

Most tourist attractions will open at Easter. Please note that 1 May is a Bank Holiday and places will be busier around this date and accommodation more expensive.
