Scotland itinerary help!

Hello all!

Need some ideas on my one week (8 day/7 nights) stay in Scotland this Fall.

I will be flying out of Dublin and going to either Inverness and make my way to Edinburgh or will fly in and out of Edinburgh. I will need to fly out of Edinburgh because I will be flying to Shannon Ireland and it had better nonstop flights than Inverness to Shannon.

I also plan on renting a car.

Places of interest: Skye, Ft. William/Glencoe, Oban, Mull, Iona, Loch Lomond, Edinburgh.

Accommodation interests: "glamping", hostels, and bed and breakfasts.

Up for your suggestions... feeling a bit overwhelmed and would like to begin narrowing down my selections!

Thank you everyone!

Interesting. I hadn't heard the term glamping, but evidently Visit Scotland has! Check it out.

Sadly, you have too much on your list. Scotland looks small, but the roads are wee and twisty and you find that you just have to stop fairly often and enjoy the view. :) Here's what it would look like on ViaMichelin if you did it all. But don't forget you need to add in Mull. At Fionnphort you catch a ferry to Iona. I sent you to Tobermory as it's a lovely town.

Now, for the advice as this is too much. :)

  • If you want to just see Loch Lomond, then you can stop off at Luss on the way north to Oban. But if you want to visit, then you need spend the night in the area. The southend is where a lot of the boat tours are. But someone else may have advice.
  • I would pick either Mull or Skye and spend at least two nights. Three would be better.
  • If you go to Mull go to Fort William next stopping off at Glencoe on the way. If you go to Skye, then you visit Glencoe and Fort William on the way to Skye.
  • Glamping--It looks like you can do something in the Great Glen. That's the Glen that stretches from Fort William to Inverness. If you spent a couple of nights in one of these places you could explore the west and north a bit. There lots of lovely walking.
  • I would then head to Edinburgh and a spend a day or two. It is the Capital City and it a great place to visit.

But, these are guesses. You've told us places you want to visit. Maybe tell us more about why you chose those places. Is it history that is driving your interests? Scenery? family history? walking? Music?

Hi Pam!

I have been to Scotland before and am now taking a friend with me and it's their first time to travel abroad.

Some reasons for the places of interest:
My ancestors are from the Loch Lomond and this year they are celebrating 1000 years of our clan. Thought it would be nice to visit the area.

I would like to see either Skye or Oban/Mull/Iona area and do some serene sightseeing and camping.

My friend and I have a friend who is living in Edinburgh and we will be staying with them for a few days.

We both want to see more scenery than museums. We both love castles ruins, ghost tours, hiking, etc.

I hope this helps!
Thanks!
