Good day,
I am planning a family trip with adult children for about 12 days. Two musts, Edinburgh, where we are flying into and the Borders area. We will staying in Edinburgh for two nights and three nights in the Peebles area. We are going to Peebles for the common riding, which can be traced back to our ancestors. We are traveling in June 2025. My dilemma is how to route this trip without double tracking and not having real long days in the car, which we will rent when we leave Edinburgh. Also, my daughter is a very good photographer who does not like cities, :)
The common ridings that we are attending will be June 16-18, those are the three nights we will be staying there. I have that all lined out. So, my first problem comes with where to start and where to end. We plan to stay two nights in Edinburgh, but do we go to Peebles first or end there. We want to see St. Andrews area, Glencoe, Oban (visit the three islands) and of course as mentioned Peebles and Edinburgh, where we will fly out for home.
Is it best to stay in Oban or stay on Mull? I found a great place on Mull, but it is west of Tobermory, but that would add time from lodging to ferry to Iona and if we start our day with ferry, what to do with luggage? Or first explore Mull for a day, check-in, then the following morning for the other two islands? Or would it be best to stay in Oban and if weather is bad, do some day trips from there?
My son has a passion for golf and I want to give him a turn on a course while we are there too. Not taking clubs, so would need to rent some from the course.
Lastly, how do I manage the trip from Oban to Edinburgh via Glencoe? I have been looking for some places to spend the night so we aren't too rushed with all the driving. And to make it a bit worse, really wanted to see the area of Plockton and Eilean Donan. I was thinking of Gleneagle as the layover so he could get a golf game in while a few others explore areas around while he golfs. But, I know there are many good courses in areas of Scotland.
Any advice or assistance is greatly appreciated!
