My husband and I are planning a trip to Scotland and Lake District in England for Sept 1-12.
We will be flying into and out of Glasgow, staying at the Dakota our first night. The major focus is to have two nights on Iona - so will take the train from Glasgow to Oban, spend one night, then take the ferry- bus - ferry to Iona and stay two nights at the Argyll. Upon return to Oban, we will spend the night at Killorn, then take the longest train ride of the trip to get to Windermere, staying at Holly Lodge for three nights. Looking at a half day tour by Mountain Goat to Beatrix Potter one day in England. We will then return to Glagow for two nights before coming home and plan to take the Rabbies tour to Culzean Castle, Burns Country & Ayrshire tour on our last full day. We will stay at the Maldron in Glasgow the last two nights. So, only 1 1/2 days of touring, but 3 days of trains. No car, so walking everywhere possible.
I would appreciate recommendations on what we can easily see in Glasgow in our free time - we will have the afternoon and evening we arrive, as well the same when we return from Windermere. I know Kelvingrove is highly recommended, wondering if it would be better the first or last trip to Glasgow.
Any recommendations for dining as well appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
