Scotland in January

Hello all-knowing forum readers!

My husband, two young children (4 and 2) and I will be in London over Christmas and then have one week to 10 days and would like to go to Scotland. While we appreciate that this might not be the best time of year to visit Scotland, we are limited by my husband's work schedule and are keen to make the best of it.

We have no set plans yet and are limited only by our return flight out of London. We will have a car.

We are looking for kid-friendly suggestions for a relaxed paced holiday. We are experienced travellers, are currently living abroad in Germany and the kids are great travellers and pretty easy to please. We love the outdoors (even in winter), good food, cultural sites, history and music.

Any ideas of must-sees and budget minded, child friendly accomodations are greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Liza

1) Take warm clothes

2) Don't bother with a car. Fly to Inverness, stay one night, take a bus to Laggan Locks and walk to Fort William (22 miles). Take a train to Glasgow or Edinburgh, stay a few days and fly home (or to wherever you parked the car)

I wouldn't drive that far but a train would be fun. I love Europe's train system. From the way you describe your kiddos they might like things in the Edinburgh area using it as a home base. We once even journeyed to Lindisfarne from there on public transport. Love Scotland, have a great time!

I hope that MC and UncleGus will chime in, but I would certainly consider renting a car for part of the trip. I would definitely fly or train it to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh, there great child friendly places.

  • Dynamic Earth--It's probably best for school age, but I am sure that there are things for young children as well.
  • Museum of Childhood--this site claims it's the noisiest museum in the world, so bring your ear plugs!
  • The Zoo--they have pandas.

Check out this helpful page for more information about children in Edinburgh.

Here's a similar link for the Highlands. I suspect that Nessieland may be in your future. :)
