I have a trip planned to Scotland in May of 2027 and my flight is already booked. My flight leaves on May 2 and I fly home on June 3, and I'm flying in and out of Aberdeen. I will be in Aberdeen for two nights when I first get there, and then will be taking the NorthLink overnight ferry to Lerwick (I know that flying is faster, but I like ferries). 😊 I will be leaving the islands probably on May 27 and will probably be taking the Stromness ferry to Scrabster, then Truso to Inverness (by bus or train), And then we'll be renting a car in Inverness and heading down to Skye for several nights. After that, I'll be driving back to Edinburgh to Aberdeen, staying 2 nights to relax a bit, and then fly home on June 3.
I will be renting cars on all the islands, depending on where I need them. I have nothing booked in the way of accommodations yet, partly because I'm getting a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of days I have there and what to do with them all. Ballpark, I was thinking I would take the first 10 days from May 6 to May 16 and spend them on Shetland, with some day trips and/or overnights to Unst and Bressey. So maybe take about 2-3 nights in the middle of that and head to Unst and/or some other islands.
Then I have from the 16th to the 27th for Orkney, and the goal was again to have 10-11 nights there, But also break it up in the middle with 2-3 nights on Westray, Rousay and maybe others?
As I mentioned above, I like ferries, so I do enjoy taking ferries from place to place, but I am also not averse to flying. In fact, one of my goals is to take the 2 minute flight from Westray to Papa Westray.
So that's where I am. I'm just trying to figure out how to allocate my time right now before I book anything and would love to have any thoughts from those who know these places and have been there. Right now, I am a mass of indecision, and it's driving me crazy. Feel free to tear my plan apart—I will not take offence. 😊 I definitely want to see as much as I can, but I would also like not to overexert myself and would like to take it at a relaxed pace. Thanks for any help you all can give me!
