Scotland Highlands

Hi
Please help me plan my vacation. I’ll be renting a car from Edinburgh with 3-4 nights to spend in the highlands.

Like most, I want to see dramatic coasts and landscapes.. castles and ruins.

I prefer to stay in towns that offer a nice variety of hotels and dining.

I don’t want to venture too much further than a 3 hr drive from Edinburgh. So I’m thinking either a loop -

Edinburgh - Pitlochry - Glen coe - Oban - Loch Lomond - Edinburgh spending a night in each highland location, perhaps 2 in Oban to take the ferry to Mull one day

OR

Just pick one town that would serve as base and do day trips. Perhaps Oban.

I’d love to hear suggestions.

Edinburgh to Glencoe/Ballachulish stopping at Stirling Castle. After Callander you'll be driving by waterfalls and lochs through beautiful highland scenery.

Then 2 nights in Oban driving along Loch Linnhe: Castle Stalker, Dunstaffnage Castle with a day to Mull and, perhaps, Iona.

Drive to Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle Ruins, then stop at Inveraray Castle. Continue to Loch Lomond for a night before returning to Edinburgh.

Or spend all your nights in one location.

The Glencoe area (or Fort William for a town experience):

  • Fort William (Ben Nevis, Neptune's Staircase)
  • Glenfinnan (Viaduct, Loch Shiel, Glenfinnan Monument)
  • Glen Etive (Skyfall)

Oban:

  • Mull, Iona and Staffa
  • Kilmartin Glen with the museum and ancient Cairns, Stones and Circles
  • the islands of Kerrera and Lismore

Oban will have more choice than Glencoe for restaurants and hotels along with shops, the Oban Distillery and the War and Peace Museum.
