Scotland for 9 days with 2 kids aged 10 and 12

We are planning a 9 day trip in Scotland (its our first time in Scotland) from Ghana in June 2nd week. We intend to hire and return the car at Edinburgh due to better car options availability. Hoping on some experts to advise on the below itinerary :
Day 1 : Arrive in London (overnight in London)
Day 2 : Take the train to Edinburgh (arrive at 3.30 PM) and drive to Aviemore. Overnight at Aviemore
Day 3 and 4 : Stay at Aviemore as a base and explore nearby attractions
Day 4 and 5 : Head to Skye as a base for next 2 days
Day 6 and 7 : Move to Glencoe and explore nearby sites
Day 8 and 9 : Drive back to Edinburgh and explore Edinburgh
Day 10 : Flight out of EDI

We want to keep the kids engaged throughout the trip and chose Aviemore as a base to do activities that kids will enjoy (wildlife, Steam railways etc). Would love to hear thoughts and experiences from people who have done this before with kids.

Is the steam train still running? I know it was out of commission at one point.

If they are at Aviemore they won't be taking the troubled Jacobite steam train, but rather the private Strathspey Steam Railway, which is a good line to take. No issues with that line.
They can also go to see the Ospreys at Boat of Garten.
Although B of G is on the steam line you need to drive to where the Ospreys are.
