We are planning to spend 3 nights in Aberdeenshire, can you suggest a good central location to stay, that would be easy accessible to visit some of the castles on the castle trail. Thank you. Eliza
A look at the map suggests Huntly, Inverurie, or Aberdeen itself. Or go on a limb out to Stonehaven.
Will you be having a car?
Yes we will have a car. This is our second visit and here our draft itinerary. I have 1 additional night and I keep going back/forth to where we should stay (Skye, Inverness or Aberdeen)
- 2 nights Glenfinnan
- 2 nights Skye
- 1 night Lewis
- 1 night Inverness
- 3 nights Aberdeen
- 2 nights Pitlochry
- 2 nights Melrose
- 3 nights Edinburgh
Based on your itinerary, drop Lewis. Unless your tastes extend to long times on a CalMac car ferry you will not be doing the islands justice. The rest looks doable.
We know people in Portknockie and their son recommended Jury's Inn in Aberdeen to us (we are going in 2 weeks). I think Aberdeen is probably a good base for some of the castles we wish to see. For us, the decision will be to rent a car in Edinburgh for 5 days or bus to Aberdeen and rent a car there for three.
